Ridgefield's American Legion Hall just north of the downtown was originally a church in the late 1700s and later the Titicus school for grades one through three.
The school was originally heated by a wood-burning pot-bellied stove. Without plumbing inside the building, the school had a boy's and a girl's outhouse. It didn't get electric lighting until 1928. Ownership was transferred to the American Legion in 1939.
