Tanglewood is the Boston Symphony Orchestra's summer home in Lenox, in the Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts. Tanglewood is a 200 acre estate with broad lawns and meadows and huge old trees. The orchestra plays inside the austere open-sided Koussevitzky Shed, where the most knowledgeable fans sit on uncomfortable wooden chairs.
People who enjoy the ambience as much as the music, like me, set up for picnics on the lawn beyond the shed.
Yesterday's afternoon performance was all-Beethoven. The two principal works were the Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-Flat, Opus 19, and Symphony No. 6 in F, Opus 68, "Pastorale." Lovely.

beautiful place to listen to beautiful music!
Jack, do you ever stop having a good time ?
Not my type of music, but it looks nice enough.
I'd take a lawn chair too. Looks like the children are enjoying the music!
Seems kinda laid back for stuffy New Englanders! :) Looks like lots of fun, actually, for kids of all ages! I'd be on the grass, too. Taking photos, too, like you!
What a terrific place for a concert and those are two of my favorite by Beethoven!! Yes, I'm just a tad envious!! Love your last shot with the kids!! Delightful!! Hope you have a great week, Jack! Enjoy!
I've wondered about this place many times. Looks like a fun afternoon.
We heard the Tanglewood Chorus perform the 1812 Overture with the Boston Pops in the bandshell along the Charles RIver in Boston for the 4th of July this year.
Tanglewood is legendary in the symphonic music business, as many symphonies would love to have a summer venue with its tradition and success. (I have been on the Board of Directors of the Phoenix Symphony for nearly 20 years).
I love your comment on my site today about the monkey who must be a college graduate who has returned home. I thin you and I have found a formula that discourages that from happening, which is children who pursue a career overseas. It makes it harder to return home.
I really envy you for this!
The children enjoy a lot!
The 3rd photo is so cute.
I'd love to be there! Sounds like a great setting for great music.
What a treat! Tanglewood is legendary. And I echo Andy's comment.
I especially love the last shot of the dancing children.
You captured the atmosphere beautifully, Jack. Looks like everyone is have a great time.
Love the wee dancers, Jack!
I've been trying in vain to make it to Tanglewood in recent years. Lucky you. I love that last portrait of the sweet pair.
I would love to hear them.
I just love the name Tanglewood.. Sounds like a very enjoyable evening Jack. Very sweet last shot :)
I've been to Tanglewood only once but it was a memorable experience. Wonderful place.
I'd have enjoyed that - the music and the whole experience. You can get close in Roberts Park at the bandstand... but not Beethoven!
I hadn't realized the music you came to listen was tango but these two kids are definitely practising their first steps. Cute as a button!
And your top banner is a dream come true. Take me there now!!!
Back in the 1960s I attended Tanglewood with friends. I believe we played scrabble on our blanket on the grass. My goodness, that brings back memories!
A completely different venue to listen to music... I like it!
oooh, nice to finally see some pictures of this! we never managed to go there....
