What a treat to discover a terrific independent bookstore that appears to be thriving. Northshire Bookstore occupies an old building just beyond a traffic circle in Manchester Village, a southern Vermont town known (unfairly) for its factory outlet shopping. The town also has numerous trails for hikers of all abilities and a gorgeous main street of stately white buildings, capped by the Equinox Golf Resort and Spa.
The photo above shows a display of Vermont-focused books. Nearby is the Sustainability section. For Love of Yurts. Going Solar. Soil and Sacrament. Does your local bookstore have a sustainability section?
I could barely tear myself away (from the mystery and novel and nonfiction rooms, not the sustainability section). And I won't confess how many books I bought or how much I spent. But I will tell you there is a wonderful cafe, and I got an apricot shortcake.

love independent bookstores!
I hope there are always books and bookstores. It's not quite the same reading a book on an electronic device.
oh, i'm so glad you had the "northshire experience"...i hope you'll come again.
Really beautiful shots Jack. Bookstores have disappeared in DC.
This is so good to see. I could and have spent all day in places like this. But they're going fast! An old bookstore on the east side of Ocala just went under. And from what I've been reading, even B&N is in trouble. Mostly, it's Amazon's fault for several reasons.
To find a gem like this would have been excellent Jack, coffee and shortbread a fabulous bonus :) I must check the 'sustainability' situation :)
Paradise on earth to my eyes!
that is great news! i love to hear of a bookstore thriving! i can spend hours and hours in a book store or library...apricot shortcake? yum!
Paradise indeed! What a find and I'm envious!! Glad you had a great day, made a terrific find and got to satisfy your sweet tooth as well!! Not just a great day -- a perfect day!!
Oh, Jack, I am so glad the this wonderful store hooked you! Long live Independent book stores and loyal customers. How's your Mankell list coming along? My husband and I keep trading ours back and forth. Read the last one of the series before I should have. . .it just happened to be available.
This aware sight indeed and it would be a most welcome sight if I could find one around here. I think there might be two or three big chain bookstores left in the entire valley area and those are quite far away from where I live. Reading books on an iPad or Kindle is one modern turn of events that I haven't quite embraced yet.
I'm a big fan of supporting independent book stores. hope you bought plenty
How rare to find a good independent bookstore. I hate to think, but the golden age of books may be past. A smaller percent of young adults enjoy reading, and an actual paper-printed book may only exist in museums and private collections in a few generations. Not long before library collections are all digital. Their card catalogs already are digital. Printed books may become too expensive for libraries to buy and maintain.
Seems Northshire is a wonderful place for reading.
Long may they live.
Looks wonderful. Books AND cake!
I miss this sort of thing living here in Coventry. We don't have many book shops like this. Even the big brand shops are going out of business. Looks a lovely building too.
I'm lucky enough to have a good independent book store within easy walking distance and it is the only place I buy books. Nice to see this one.
I would love to see more of these bookstores thriving. They are real treasures and this one seems a real treat, down to that apricot shortcake!
Hi Jack! I had to respond to your comment on Ocala 'cause I didn't know that your neighbors called the authorities when spotting you smoking a little weed!
And we no longer live in a gated community - Yea!
Looks like a place I'd love!
I saw a couple of books I would like to read.
Apricot shortcake, that would have made my day.
Um, uh, my bookstore is based in Seattle and sends me books through the air. Not very romantic.
My kind of bookstore!
I'm so envious of your independent bookstore!
My husband and daughter would love the the sustainability section, but I would gravitate elsewhere.
