Vault

A vault at the Catholic cemetery I often drive past.

Some day I should park and wander the grounds.

Carnival

The firefighters parade ended at the middle school, where a carnival entertained young and old.

She has always been competitive, but I thought I taught her not to cheat.

The younger granddaughter thought every ride was "GREAT!!!"

No thank you.  I don't like heights and my stomach is . . . vulnerable.

As expected, the younger granddaughter declared Avalanche to be "GREAT!"
The older granddaughter barely kept her lunch in.  I'm with her.

Plenty of fun running and sliding around the castle.

Both granddaughters loved the spinners.

Bands

Some musicians marching with their bands in the parade honoring Ridgefield firefighters..

I regret that I wasn't in position when the fife and drum group and the bagpipers went past.

Monkey Bars

Always an easy way to spend an hour or so with the littlest one.

Ridgefield Fire Department 125th Anniversary Parade

Friday night the local fire department held a big parade on Main Street.  I saw the parade near its end at the middle school. There were vehicles from numerous surrounding cities and towns.  I liked the old vehicles, many of which were also driven by old firefighters.

Crosswinds Golf Club

Crosswinds is a 27-hole municipal golf course owned by the Town of Plymouth, Massachusetts.  My friends play it weekly and I play it two or three times a year when I visit them.

Crosswinds is a hilly and heavily wooded New England-style course open to the public for daily play, Many private clubs would be delighted if their courses were as beautiful and in as good shape.

Brown University

I drove through Providence on Tuesday on my way to play golf with friends in eastern Massachusetts.  So long as I was in town, I stopped at my alma mater, Brown University, for a sandwich and a fifteen minute walk around.  The place looked great.

Faunce House encloses the northern end of the college green.  It is the equivalent of a student union.  A Henry Moore statue has been added since I was there.

Until four years ago, this handsome building housed 19 small classrooms.  Now, named for the donors who funded the extensive renovations, Friedman Hall is home to seven spacious, light-filled classrooms across its three floors, as well as common areas for students to study and gather informally.

This is the entrance to Wriston Quadrangle, built in the late 1950s to house male undergraduates and fraternities.  It is now coed.  Few fraternities remain.

Sayles Hall anchors the east end of the college green.  It hosts concerts and large gatherings.  It is said to be modeled after H.H.Richardson's Trinity Church in Boston.

The Van Wickle Gates lead to a small green behind University Hall, the administration building.  The central Van Wickle Gates are closed at all times except for opening inward to receive new students in the fall and outward in the spring to send graduates into the world.

The John Carter Brown Library is a center for advanced research in history and the humanities.  In my four years on the campus, I never set foot in the building.  A few years ago I entered during an open house on a reunion weekend.  It was very impressive.

Lyman Hall had a dark and smelly swimming pool when I was a student.  All athletic facilities have been relocated to grand new buildings elsewhere.  Lyman Hall now has a theater and dance studio.

Around the House

There are very few big birds in the dense forest around my house, and smaller songbirds move often and fast.  They are hard to photograph.  A male and a female house finch took pity on me and posed.

I planted milkweed last year.  Some clumps have come up nicely this spring.

There is an old farmhouse across the street.

Silverman's Farm

Not quite a zoo.  A variety of animals to view and feed.  Mostly farm animals, but with a bison, some llamas, alpacas and emus.
