Lincoln Kirstein

(a)  Lincoln Kirstein founded the New York City Ballet and served as its general director for 43 years.

(b)  Kirstein was one of the Monument Men, a group of Allied soldiers who protected cultural sites from bombing by the Allied forces and then recovered many stolen art objects from Germany during and immediately after World War II.

(c)  Kirstein is the subject of a bronze bust by the noted Japanese American sculptor Isamu Noguchi, displayed in Hartford's Wadsworth Atheneum.

(d)  All of the above.

Yes, it is (d).  How did you know?

He was a very accomplished gentleman. I really did enjoy the Movie "Monument Men". It was a story I did not know.

That is a fine looking sculpture to honor a man who gave his life to the arts. I didn't know about him, but now I do. Thank you.

Great bust! The same Noguchi of “Red Cube”? It is almost incredible...

An impressive bust. I was familiar with the Monuments Men, from a documentary that came out some years before the feature film.

Because we believe everything you tell us Jack :) He has a very wide forehead, the sign of great intelligence or so I've heard!

I am very pleased to have met him. Sort of met. Superb bust too.

(There were no people near the fountain. For once I would have liked there to be someone to give a sense of scale...)

Because I taught a unit on the Holocaust, I have researched and gained more knowledge than I really wanted to know, the Monument Men and stolen art . were familiar topics. Really amazing! The sculpture is a stark and powerful image.
