Betances School

The Betances School is just east of Main Street in the Charter Oak neighborhood of Hartford.  It was named for the father of the Puerto Rican independence movement.

It's always nice to be recognized. But PR is still not independent.

I did a bit of research before making this post, but did not uncover a connection between Betances and Hartford. My assumption is that it is like Columbus and Washington and MLK . . . notable individuals are honored even if they have no specific connection to the city. I would be happy to have someone correct me.

The link provided some fascinating information, e.g. the "whitening" of the family. To his credit, he was not happy about it and considered it hypocrisy. He was quite an accomplished individual, one whom any school would be proud to honor.

That's an interesting person to name a school after, I like it.

I wouldn't expect to find a school named for a Peurto Rican in Connecticut. But I definitely like it! Love the building too. Red brick just seems to be what a school should be made of. :)

Oh wow I'd be impressed if I went there as a child. The symbols of chains are interesting.

Thank you for having introduced me to Dr. Betances. I confess I haven't heard of him before and I should have, an independence movement is something you must know of.

I wonder if the students have a short nickname for their school - the full name is quite a mouthful.
I've been away and missed a lot of posts - you've been showing some interesting stuff. The American flag on my blog is, I think, to say welcome, because so many Americans visit York.
