Better him than me! Hope you was very careful up on that ladder as a friend of ours just fell off one and broke his pelvis! YES - the uncropped photo is best - love the building!
I like your rationale. Rules are made to be broken. I've heard that somewhere.
Actually, I like the vertical "action" best...it best portrays the danger this guy is in ... just a reach of another inch is gonna send him crashing down!
You definitely made the right choice Jack. Can just hear the painter thinking "must.. just.. reach.. that.. last.. spot" and totally admire his casual little ankle twist! Btw love your post for yesterday and agree that it is so nice these days to see someone with faith in an 'honour box' also 'flower power'....!!
I have to repeat Genie's 1-5! Terrific captures and do your own thing because you are good! And what a delightful house! Oh, and stay off the ladders, okay??
I am a building lover so will have to go with #3 as well. However would love to see it cropped as you did with number one except with the painter to the left. That way you still see the beautiful building but put more of the focus on the painter.

Bises,
Genie
Great instructions!
I'm with Genie - make your own rules - love the bottom uncropped pic!
The painters rules
1. Have one hand holding onto structure
2. Keep one foot on ladder
3. Stretch
I like the painter as a secondary character in the picture. It's a great building.
I like the vertical shot. The painter arching to paint the trim adds a nice element to the photo.

I, too, vote for the final shot. Rule Last: follow your instincts.
I definitely like the third (non)crop best. The painter is perfectly placed in the shot and it is a nice building!
Jack, following your thought processes like this is great! I agree that the widest shot is best, by far.
Yes! Nothing better than the whole picture.

As surfers say... hang ten! I hope.

I like your full picture on the bottom but, that fellow is making me dizzy.

Whatever could one add after Genie? :-)
Except maybe that I hope he doesn't get tendonitis. I've had it bad for almost 2 months now.
The rule of thirds is only a GUIDE! I like the third photo because it IS a beautiful building. :)
Jack, this is such a cool post! I really enjoyed it and the building is gorgeous!
P.S. And I'm smiling at Genie's #5. :-)
I'm glad you broke the rules Jack!
The building is terrific, action is superb so what would we need rules for! Love this post, Jack!
It's amazing, the instructions and the pictures!
* in some way this post reminds me our place in South of Brazil!
hugs and a nice week

I agree about the last solution, but the house (very nice, by the way) is still leaning...
Well it reminds me of a series of photos that circulated through email about "Dumb Things Men Do". Hmmm this could have been a contender.
I will show your series to my next photography class on Rule of Thirds. Parfait! :)

A beautiful structure that I would hate to paint!
I vote for door # 3 also! Great building.

Oh, to hell with the rule of thirds. Question Authority.
Don't ask me I always got in trouble for coloring outside of the lines.
YOU know what you're doing; him, I'm not so sure.
Haha...oh I have to laugh at what "Oakland Daily Photo" just said!
Rules ARE made to be broken. Especially in photography cases:)
I sure like the building...
Ooh, hope it's only the rules that get broken!
#3! Did you offer to explain to the painter the rule of thirds?
