Downtown

Frugal New Englanders didn't waste much of anything. 

 In Ridgefield's downtown, lots of the commercial buildings were originally residences.

Conversion from residence to commercial is a pattern of urban growth. They often exist in a zone called "interstitial" meaning a transition from residence to commercial.
