Men of the Ringling Museum of Art

This is thought to be a bust of an important Florentine
politician, around 1500.

This is an Italian marble bust from about 1650.

This is an 1874 marble bust of Edwin Wallace Stoughton, a wealthy lawyer who
became U.S. ambassador to Russia.  It is by the noted American
sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and was one of
Saint-Gaudens' first commissions.

This is a replica of Michelangelo's David.

Three great pieces of sculpture: the one by Saint-Gaudens goes very well with the older ones. I am used to see the David in white (the marble original in the Accademia and the copy in Piazza della Signoria) or greenish, like the bronze copy in Piazzale Michelangelo. This one is my first in dark grey, which is nice but probably a bit too 'modern'.

David must be happy he's in Florida. :)

Love the Florentine and David ain't bad, either, yet I prefer the one in Italy.

Well done. I seem to 'miss' the sculptures when I visit the museum because I enjoy the classic paintings so much. Did you know that David is the city's logo? Tis true! Shall we in the blogosphere look forward to seeing the women of Ringling next?

That's a great spot for the David statue. Comes out nicely.

Beautiful sculptures here but, I'm with most of those above, David in that dark stone doesn't seem quite right.

Incredible sculptures and, of course, the David is always fantastic, although for some reason he looks a little out of place here??? Your pics are superb, as always, too!! Have a great weekend, stay out of trouble!!

Impressive sculptures, particularly the first one... there's a lot of character in that face.

The Sisters of Little Or No Mercy would be shocked, shocked, I say, by David!

Beautifully carved strong faces Jack.. David seems to be causing a bit of controversy.. I wonder if because it's so obviously a copy the sculptor decided to make his own interpretation?

Never knew David wintered in Naples! Beautiful sculptures.

David has picked a nice spot, Jack!

There's obviously a ban on smiling when you are sculpted...sooo serious, but handsome men all.

David's dark, I hope he likes his tan.

I especially like the Italian marble bust—looks like someone I know.

I have to agree with Andy.
