This is an interesting one. The finial for the pew honoring the Hartford Fire Department shows Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in a fiery furnace. I wonder how many people make the connection between a biblical fire and the local firefighters!
Some of you have asked if this is a U.S. tradition. I have never seen another chapel with anything like this. So far as I know -- and I am not an ecclesiastical expert -- it is unique.

I've been in a lot of churches but have never seen anything like this before. Maybe it's "New England"?
This is very well done even if the mythology is rather crass. :-)
Nope...I've never seen anything like it either. Your backstories are so helpful and interesting. What firefighter wouldn't want to escape a fire without so much as the smell of smoke?! Bw, thanks for your nice comment on last year's baseball pics. This year, I decided to take a different approach with spring training. Maybe I'll end up at a minor league game this summer....
i repeat...I'd like to spend some time in that church, viewing the different carvings. So interesting, Jack~
So cute Jack ... It made me laugh! Imagine the fire-fighters being in the burning furnace pew. Amazing details in this carving... Well captured!
They are great Jack! I love them all:)
You have become a master of the depth of field thingy!
I didn't. I was just thinking that those portraied here were quite inept firemen...
This one is quite funny!
I wouldn't have connected those three with firefighters. I think this is very unique. I've never seen anything like this before.
I certainly wouldn't have made the connection, sorry: je n'aurais certainement pas fait le lien... :-)
So the firemen are burning? Wow! Great carving and awesome shot Jack!
I've never seen another chapel like this one before and it is unique! Love this latest finial! I wouldn't have made the connection so I thank you for pointing it out! It's perfect! I surely am enjoying this series of yours, Jack! Thank you! Enjoy your day!

I'm sure not many would make the connection Jack, of course I did straight away haha! and like everyone above I've not seen this sort of thing before so I think it definitely is a unique tradition.
Very interesting meaning and story about this sculpture.
Your picture is great!

Really unique, Jack, I like it.
I am another that would the connection of these 3 burning with to firefighters. Well done.
I have never seen another church with such carvings.
The small details are fabulous, and each carving teaches us something, that's really fascinating!
This is great! Personally, I'd worry about knocking into one of those amazing filials - would be just my dumb luck.
I certainly wouldn't have thought of firefighters!
This is unique, but I must say that I really like it.
This artist is amazing.
Someone with a super imagination came up with this!
I certainly wouldn't have found the connection. I just love these carvings.
Wonderful photographs in this series, thanks so much for sharing them! I came across this looking for more information on the carver, J. Gregory Wiggins. He did a similar set of finial carvings in our school chapel choir practice room (although not as many as this!), at St. Paul's School in Concord, NH. There is a short bio of his work at SPS online here for anyone intersted: http://www.ohrstromblog.com/spsarchives/the-form-plaques-of-john-gregory-wiggins
Thanks so much for these wonderful photographs!
