all are fabulous, some are easy to understand, the first one scares me: what do they do to the child?..There's surely a good explanation, but this one is disturbing.
Fortunately, Malyss, I bought a book explaining the carvings when I was at the chapel, so I can look it up. The first carving was given by a founder of what today is the Connecticut Children's Medical Center in Hartford. The children's hospital is symbolized by two early Christian martyrs, Saints Cosmos and Damian, brothers and physicians, supporting a child with developmental disabilities.
Very cool. As I said, I've never seen nuttin' like it. If I attended a service there I know I'd not hear a thing that was going on 'cause I'd be looking at these funky finials!
It would be impossible to choose a favorite since each one is unique and beautifully crafted. Because of this medley post today, I have a feeling that this is the last glimpse of the finials. The final finials...if so, I am so sad!! I think you should hast a finial fest so that those of us who are interested can descend upon you and visit your great city.
I think I said it before but, I've never seen anything like this before. These are very unique. I like that top shot where you can see all those different shapes and styles in the background.
I'll take a gaggle just because the word always makes me smile -- geese or not! These are all incredible and I have so enjoyed your posts showing individual ones! A terrific series, Jack! Hope your weekend is off to a great start! Enjoy!
Thank you for explaination! I was thinking it could not be something bad, as we're in a church. But I would not imagine that.I was thinking of something like taking an orphan away from street.Glad you bought the book! :o)
I really like them a lot Jack, but somehow I think if I happened to be in there on my own, it might creep me out a little, all those little people and creatures surrounding me!!
All those wooden pieces are really impressive! Even when you said that we were in for a treat, I would never expect that much! Truly remarkable! God bless you! Cezar
They are very remarkable pieces. The book must be interesting, as it seems most commemorate something or someone. The stories behind each are fascinating.

Amazing! All one artist?
So many beautiful carvings!
I am flabbergasted that any of them survived down to our time. Such things are stolen, chiseled off, broken or just vandalized over here.
Since I was hacked I had to give up my old user name and the blogs that went with it.
So this is the new birds blog and I hope you can come visit. Birds Birds Birds and Birds
These are all amazing. I really want to visit that place. How about a bunch of finials?

This is an amazing collection of photos. I had no idea there could be so many finials in one place.
a feast of finials. thanks for showing these to us, jack.
Truly amazing craftsmanship!
I just love the details in the cravings and as I have said in the past the lighting gives all these pieces a warm and comfortable feeling.

Yes, amazing is the word...
Finally, some free time...
A flock? Mob, rabble, mass, swarm or pack? (Mac OS has a built-in dictionary and thesaurus.)
This is quite amazing, each and individual. Sort of like the terra cotta warriors of X'ian but with much finer detail.

This is not only a chapel, this is a museum!
Amazing sculptures.
These really are so beautiful and amazing. I have really enjoyed this series and I would love to visit this chapel in person. :)
Trully amazing! I have never seen anything of the kind in a church. Love this set of shots!
Amazing! Really beautiful Jack!

I have been in a lot of churches in a lot of countries, but have never seen anything like this.
You must have a lot of photos lined up to post in the future. I would have milked another week of two out of your series of posts of finials.
All those wooden pieces are really impressive! Even when you said that we were in for a treat, I would never expect that much! Truly remarkable!

I like a feast of finials. There is even a hockey player there.

Exquisite !! Such attention to detail and the timber is wonderful and warm.
They are absolutely wonderful! All of them!
have a nice Sunday:)
Have not seen wood sculptures like these in a church, I like them !
Nothing like I have ever seen before.
Seeing these and thinking of the fire fighter's pew, I'd be hard pressed to find the connection between some of these and local professional groups.
