Hartford Fire Department

This is an interesting one.  The finial for the pew honoring the Hartford Fire Department shows Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in a fiery furnace.  I wonder how many people make the connection between a biblical fire and the local firefighters!

Some of you have asked if this is a U.S. tradition.  I have never seen another chapel with anything like this.  So far as I know -- and I am not an ecclesiastical expert -- it is unique.

  1. I've been in a lot of churches but have never seen anything like this before. Maybe it's "New England"?

This is very well done even if the mythology is rather crass. :-)

  2. Nope...I've never seen anything like it either. Your backstories are so helpful and interesting. What firefighter wouldn't want to escape a fire without so much as the smell of smoke?! Bw, thanks for your nice comment on last year's baseball pics. This year, I decided to take a different approach with spring training. Maybe I'll end up at a minor league game this summer....

  22. Wonderful photographs in this series, thanks so much for sharing them! I came across this looking for more information on the carver, J. Gregory Wiggins. He did a similar set of finial carvings in our school chapel choir practice room (although not as many as this!), at St. Paul's School in Concord, NH. There is a short bio of his work at SPS online here for anyone intersted: http://www.ohrstromblog.com/spsarchives/the-form-plaques-of-john-gregory-wiggins

Thanks so much for these wonderful photographs!
