This is an interesting one. The finial for the pew honoring the Hartford Fire Department shows Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in a fiery furnace. I wonder how many people make the connection between a biblical fire and the local firefighters!
Some of you have asked if this is a U.S. tradition. I have never seen another chapel with anything like this. So far as I know -- and I am not an ecclesiastical expert -- it is unique.
I've been in a lot of churches but have never seen anything like this before. Maybe it's "New England"?
ReplyDeleteThis is very well done even if the mythology is rather crass. :-)
Nope...I've never seen anything like it either. Your backstories are so helpful and interesting. What firefighter wouldn't want to escape a fire without so much as the smell of smoke?! Bw, thanks for your nice comment on last year's baseball pics. This year, I decided to take a different approach with spring training. Maybe I'll end up at a minor league game this summer....
ReplyDeletei repeat...I'd like to spend some time in that church, viewing the different carvings. So interesting, Jack~
ReplyDeleteSo cute Jack ... It made me laugh! Imagine the fire-fighters being in the burning furnace pew. Amazing details in this carving... Well captured!
ReplyDeleteThey are great Jack! I love them all:)
ReplyDeleteYou have become a master of the depth of field thingy!
ReplyDeleteI didn't. I was just thinking that those portraied here were quite inept firemen...
ReplyDeleteThis one is quite funny!
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't have connected those three with firefighters. I think this is very unique. I've never seen anything like this before.
ReplyDeleteI certainly wouldn't have made the connection, sorry: je n'aurais certainement pas fait le lien... :-)
ReplyDeleteSo the firemen are burning? Wow! Great carving and awesome shot Jack!
ReplyDeleteI've never seen another chapel like this one before and it is unique! Love this latest finial! I wouldn't have made the connection so I thank you for pointing it out! It's perfect! I surely am enjoying this series of yours, Jack! Thank you! Enjoy your day!
ReplyDeleteSylvia
I'm sure not many would make the connection Jack, of course I did straight away haha! and like everyone above I've not seen this sort of thing before so I think it definitely is a unique tradition.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting meaning and story about this sculpture.
ReplyDeleteYour picture is great!

Really unique, Jack, I like it.
ReplyDeleteI am another that would the connection of these 3 burning with to firefighters. Well done.
ReplyDeleteI have never seen another church with such carvings.
The small details are fabulous, and each carving teaches us something, that's really fascinating!
ReplyDeleteThis is great! Personally, I'd worry about knocking into one of those amazing filials - would be just my dumb luck.
ReplyDeleteI certainly wouldn't have thought of firefighters!
ReplyDeleteThis is unique, but I must say that I really like it.
ReplyDeleteThis artist is amazing.
ReplyDeleteSomeone with a super imagination came up with this!
ReplyDeleteI certainly wouldn't have found the connection. I just love these carvings.
ReplyDeleteWonderful photographs in this series, thanks so much for sharing them! I came across this looking for more information on the carver, J. Gregory Wiggins. He did a similar set of finial carvings in our school chapel choir practice room (although not as many as this!), at St. Paul's School in Concord, NH. There is a short bio of his work at SPS online here for anyone intersted: http://www.ohrstromblog.com/spsarchives/the-form-plaques-of-john-gregory-wiggins
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for these wonderful photographs!
