Yellow and Orange

 

A stone wall, hedge and trees give this Main Street house a lot of privacy, but in July the foreground showcases yellow and orange daylilies and yellow coreopsis (tickweed).

West Hartford Library

 A lunch stop in West Hartford Center in transit between Ridgefield and Cape Cod provided a chance to see the new mural painted on the side of the Noah Webster Library.

Corey Pane is the lead artist for the mural.  It is sponsored by RiseUp, a youth development and mentoring program that has plans to place ~40 murals around Connecticut.  Ridgefield tomorrow.

Elsa

 We caught the east side of Elsa.  She was a strong tropical storm, but short of a hurricane.  She passed through on Friday from about 8 a.m. through 4 p.m..  I stayed inside the rented house during the heavy rain and wind, so I couldn't find anything to illustrate the storm. 

After the storm passed but while strong winds still blew, I went out on the deck and watched several ospreys fight their way into the wind.  The camera with the bigger lens was in the car, but this image with my "landscape/people/moderate telephoto" lens showed both the struggling bird and the whitecaps.

Whale Watch

 We went on a whale watch out to the Stellwagen Bank, the feeding grounds off Provincetown.

In some dives, whales just roll over.  But, in some, they raise their flukes to dive deeper.

Humpback whales were plentiful.  Some fed in pods of two or three.

The harbor below the house I am renting this week is home to a great number of oyster farms.  At low tide, trucks drive out to the oyster racks:  rows of mesh containers suspended just above the seafloor so the oysters can soak up the tidal nutrients.  The farms go on for miles.  This is just one small section.

 Ten years ago a group of local citizens acquired and repurposed a neglected Catholic church and turned it into a lovely arts venue.  Exhibitions.  Yoga.  Backyard concerts.  Readings.
