Climbing Camp

A summer camp is held on the Connecticut River riverfront.  Among the activity centers are a ropes course and a climbing wall.

High Water Mark

Well, today's post is more for information than for photography.

Markers on a Bulkeley Bridge column indicate the normal seasonal high water level at Hartford and the water levels in three past major Connecticut River floods.
 
The normal river level at Hartford is 3.8 feet, way below the bridge supports, as shown above.  The normal spring flood level is 20 feet above sea level, the lowest of the four markers on the bridge support and perhaps four feet above this part of the walkway.

The highest flood level in Hartford was at 37.0 feet above sea level in March 1936, marked by the highest of the four markers on the bridge support.  A nearby plaque explains that the ground was frozen solid and about 30 inches of snow were on the ground when the 1936 rains began.  Fourteen inches of rain fell over nine days and triggered the flood.

Doc Hurley All-Stars

The Greater Hartford Pro-Am summer basketball league is underway.  It is held at a local high school gym.  The play is at an elite level.

Last night three members of the UConn 2010 national basketball team -- Kemba Walker, Roscoe Smith and Tyler Olander -- played for the Doc Hurley All-Stars.

Kemba graduated in May.  He was drafted to play in the NBA for the Charlotte Hornets, but he plays in this summer league to stay sharp and in shape.  Kemba is number 25, scoring in the first photo and in the portrait at right.

Olander and Smith both started for UConn last year as freshmen and will return this year. Smith is scoring in the picture below.

In addition to current and former UConn stars, this summer league draws players from other colleges and recent graduates, including some who play professional basketball.

Stanwyck Cromwell

Stanwyck Cromwell was born in Guyana but immigrated to Connecticut in 1970.  He earned art degrees from the University of Hartford and paints saturated portraits and scenes with a Caribbean influence.  The Connecticut Historical Society currently has an exhibition of Cromwell's works.  Today's photos are details taken from some of his paintings in the current exhibition.
  

Red Dress Run for Women

This is an annual 5K race, raising fitness awareness and funds to combat heart disease in women.

There were 1,200 official runners.

Some runners took the "red dress" idea literally.

I liked the similarities between this pretty mother - daughter team.

Stefanie Wenneborg from Tucson, Arizona, led from the start and won the race.



 

Connecticut Historical Society

The Connecticut Historical Society has an exhibition about The Making of Connecticut.  Most objects were in cases and didn't photograph well.  However, there was an exhibition of colorful artwork by an artist from Guyana, Stanwyck Cromwell, who now lives in Bloomfield.  You will see some of his work soon.

Weekend Reflections: A Hot Photographer

 
So, what happened here?  I shot through a window into a bistro with a blazing oven.  The flame is all that can be seen from inside.  The rest is reflected back from the window.
