Buttolph-Williams House

Broad Street in Wethersfield is home to many old houses.  The Buttolph-Williams House was built in 1711.  It was declared a national historic landmark in 1968.

The Witches of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare is a 1958 Newberry Medal-winning children's book that was set in this house.  The book is about a young girl who arrives here from Barbados.  She arouses suspicion among the townspeople because she can swim, stands up to her elders and befriends an old woman regarded as a witch.

The house is rustic right down to the door knocker.

Thank you , as always, for your comments. We were away in Ireland for several seeks, so I have not had a chance to visit websites or comment during my absence.

Lovely house and good that it is listed and will be preserved. As so often, the real beauty is in the detail, as you have shown.

What a cool knocker? Clasp? And the book is a favorite of mine. I too did not know that it was set in an actual house.

I'm wondering about how many women were seen as witches and killed only because they were more clever or more beautiful than the others..

Love the first image of the door knocker. The book does sound interesting.

1711 ...no wonder that door knocker is a wee bit rusty :)

Terrific shots... I haven't heard of the book before, though.

That old knocker has aged well! I read that book long long ago, how utterly fascinating to see the house where it was set.
