Everyone who goes to Venice takes this shot.
I like the mid-day shot. It communicates the sizzling sun on a summer day in Venice.
But, I love the evening shot, showing the golden hour on the other side of the canal
and the arrival of twilight on my side.

You caught the perfect light of the perfect scene.
Te light is great, you are right !
WOW simply perfect !
Beautiful. I took this shot, too. In the Italian section of Epcot!
Great light!
Both of these are wonderful! I have such fond memories of my visit there last year and you photos bring them rushing back.
Beautiful captures, Jack! I, too, love the last one in particular with the soft light! Lovely!!
Hummm, twilight in Venice! (sigh)The golden hour is my favorite!
I see a new(?) big statue that I did not know..
I hope one day I can stand right there where you are. Wonderful photographs!
Perfection twice.
Gorgeous!
Love the colours in the 2nd one. Welcome home, Jack!
You are clearly having a wonderful holiday
The evening shot is beautiful!
@Malyss: The big sculpture you see across the canal is a controversial purple inflated balloon sculpture by an English artist. It depicts a nude androgynous and yet pregnant figure with a few other deformities. Here is a link to an article about it, with a variety of other photos: http://veneziablog.blogspot.com/2013/05/marc-quinns-alison-lapper-pregnant-on.html.
Sure. I did, too. But I like the evening shot much better - so much atmosphere and romance.
Lucky you!
what a difference the light makes!
The glow of the light in the evening shot is terrific. I could feel the blinding light and humidity of the daytime photo.
The golden hour wins every time.
I hope that balloonish horror will be deflated soon. I saw the original in London and, in its original size, it wasn't so bad. Here is really too big and completely out of place.
A beautiful scene at any hour, but rather ruined by that hideous statue.
Amazing sun light, your pictures are beautiful!

I love both, but the second photo is magical!!!
They look a bit familiar ;-)
Stunning shots, especially the second one (looks like the gondolas are done for the day). Too bad about the purple, uh, sculpture. I prefer its midday color.
Be still my heart!

I love how the colour is so vibrant in the lower shot. You captured what tourists think of when they envision Venice.
