You thought The Great Snowstorm of 2013 only affected New York, Hartford, Boston and Portland? The world is so small today that the ripples reached Florida. Canceled flights kept some lobster red New Englanders down here scrambling for places to stay and prevented the next round of pale-faced visitors from getting their expensive new sunburns.
There is certainly a serious side to a big storm like this one. Close friends in eastern Massachusetts had a 40 foot tree come down in the middle of the night, crunching two cars. One of the limbs came through the wall of the bedroom where they were sleeping. They are OK and insurance will take care of most of the financial damage, but it was frightening and a reminder of Mother Nature's power.

Glad your friends are all right. We were lucky and didn't suffer any damage despite many trees losing limbs around us.
My friend Mary works for a major airline. I think she might need another trip to Paris to help her unwind!

Sorry about your friend's troubles. Having grown up in Illinois I remember those things happening quite often. In fact we had a tree smash through our kitchen one year during a summer storm. We were not in the room at the time so we were okay but the house needed major repairs. We also had a tree near the street crash down on a friend's car while he was having dinner with us. "Crash....what was that....oh a tree just fell on your car". It's funny.....now.
That a lot more damage that 35.5 inches of whiteness. Good luck to them and the dealing w/ the 'hartford' and that red umbrella. Grin.
Spooky about the tree! Carmel is packed with trees and every storm blows a few over (you just hope it's not your time). Meanwhile I must say, you've got quite a nice set up there poolside!
Friends of mine were forced to spend 2 extra days in West Palm Beach on the weekend - the hardship of it all. ;-)
That is frightening and what a nightmare!! Glad your friends weren't hurt, but it is sad about their cats and the damage to their house!!

Jack, I was once snowed in while visiting San Francisco. The Midwest was closed, and I couldn't fly back. When I did finally get back, found my car under a deep snowdrift. Fortunately it still ran, and I was able to dig it out.
Don't fool with Mother Nature; she can be pretty lethal.

I am glad your friends are ok - how terrifying. So many of our friends have had similar things happen and I know very well how lucky my family was to come through this storm with just a little cold spell in the house.

The snowstorm of the century is only a headline when you get to hang out in Florida. How nice to have a getaway.
