Governor William A. Buckingham

William Buckingham was the governor of Connecticut during the Civil War.  He is credited with providing uniforms and arms to the Connecticut men serving the Union, so that Connecticut soldiers were the first fully provisioned soldiers for the Union forces.  After the war he served a term as a U.S. Senator.  Today he sits at the west end of the Capitol.

A very serious visage befitting a governor and senator.

Looks like a serious man! I remember you showing us a closer view of those columns in the background too. Your capitol building is really lovely.

The light in these photos really grabs me - the gold seems to set off the importance of the man.

He looks very serious, maybe he had to be so during the Civil War.
Wonderful photos Jack, as always.

It looks like he might have the best seat in the house!

He does look serious and he definitely has the best seat in the house! Terrific capture for the day, Jack! That is such an incredible, beautiful place! Your photos are definitely the next best thing to being there, but I would like to visit there myself! Enjoy your day!

Not a man to argue with I'd guess.

Is he thinking 'I am determined to get up and walk for a change?' (In the thinking statues style of VP...)Just saying, because he really does look very determined. A man to be reckoned with!

I love that second shot! I think I would whisper in there.

In the first shot, the Governor looks rather stern and imposing. But, in the second, he appears to be watching over the place. You captured this brilliantly.

An honorable place befitting this man stature.

He looks like the kind of guy who who know how to make things happen, like dress his state's soldiers in proper uniforms. He also looks like he may have been a tall man for his time.

Looks very stately.

A stern looking figure!

He looks distinguished, even magisterial in the bottom photo but the profile on top makes me think of George W. Busch in a really bad mood.
