Out off the Jurisdiction: Finally, Sun in Quebec!

I started in Paillard, a pastry shop on Rue Saint-Jean, 

favored by Inspector Gamache in Louise Penny's Bury Your Dead.

I liked walking along the seawall of Île d'Orléans, a big island in the St. Lawrence River that looks back to Quebec City.  There were numerous charming cottages with views to the river.

And, off course, a stop for chocolate.

I'm always trying to take photos out of train and bus windows, but the motion and the reflections and the tinted windows usually defeat me.  But, I liked this bus window shot of farmland on Île d'Orléans.

At Montmorency Falls the heavy rains of the past few days combined with the snowmelt

to produce an impressively heavy flow.

Out of the Jurisdiction: Quebec City at Night

It was a good night, so I took a walk.



A fountain and the Quebec Parliament.

 A shopping street was blocked off.  Pedestrians strolled and street musicians played.

I looked into a charming cafe.

An older musician played classic rock tunes and young fans danced.

Out of the Jurisdiction: Rainy Quebec City

 Rainy today and the forecast is for more rain in the coming days.

A tour guide explained a statue in the rain.

And in the courtyard of a former monastery.

A horse and carriage had no business.

They aim cannons at citizens in Quebec.  Strange.

There was a brief bit of sunshine after lunch at the Chateau Frontenac, so I took a photo.

Might be the last sun for a while, so you take what you can get.

Out of the Jurisdiction: Organist of the Basilica de Notre Dame

Pierre Grandmaison is the longtime organist of the Basilica de Notre Dame in Montreal.

We were treated to an hour-long talk about the organ, with Grandmaison giving examples of its many tones.  Then he played several Bach pieces, a wedding march and improvisations on the theme of Amazing Grace.  Superb.  For me, it was the highlight of this trip to Montreal.

A gallery on Rue Saint Paul West had several sculptures of large animals.

The wooden giraffe in the window provided a nice reflection with the windows across the street.

Out of the Jurisdiction: Montreal Murals

A Montreal neighborhood has many murals, and this week is the annual festival

during which new mural are painted.

This is a new mural being painted this week.  I think the artist is Hachem.

This mural from a previous year symbolizes the good and bad of immigrating to Quebec.

A mural honoring Hall of Fame baseball player, Jackie Robinson, the first black player in the major leagues.  He played two years in Montreal before being called up to the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Another mural for Montreal's favorite son, the poet, song writer and singer, Leonard Cohen.

A clever new temporary mural was painted on the pavement.  From all other perspectives, it is elongated, but from this one spot it has normal perspective.  It is called "Fake News," 

and has newspaper printed on the toilet paper.
