Out of the Jurisdiction: Liliesleaf Farm and Museum

Yesterday I visited Liliesleaf Farm and Museum.  In the early 1960s, anti-apartheid activists plotted their activities at Liliesleaf.  Nelson Mandela hid out at the farm, posing as a farm worker.

On July 11, 1963, the police raided the farm while a meeting of top African National Congress officials took place.  Nineteen leaders of the movement were arrested.  Eight, including Mandela, received life sentences after the trial, known as the Rivonia Trial.

It was a quiet day, and only one other party was having lunch.  I recognized one diner, Denis Goldberg, as one of the 19 arrested and 8 convicted in the Liliesleaf raid.  (In the museum I had seen a video in which Goldberg reminisced about the raid.)  My daughter recognized another diner
as Kgalema Motlanthe, a former President of South Africa.

They were happy to let me take a photograph.

A break from safari photographs to chronicle some of Willa's discoveries.

When Willa grabs a chunk of Lola, Lola doesn't seem to mind.

There is another adorable baby in the mirror who looks just like Willa!

Sequoia misses the attention Willa now gets.  Maybe this will catch the adults' attention. 

Out of the Jurisdiction: Lions

A male and female lion club were part of a six lion pride, along with two lionesses and two males.
They were resting in the shade of trees and bushes.

This male displayed his teeth to show that he is dominant and could make a snack out of me.

OK, you caught me.  He just yawned.

A few days later, the two lionesses (above) led the hunt with the two cubs following behind at a distance.  The two males brought up the rear.  (Female viewers can comment to their heart's content.)

Out of the Jurisdiction: Elephants

How about some more photos from the safari this week?

Elephants are plentiful in the Botswana bush.  This fine elephant dined on delicious palmettos 

in Xigera Bush Camp, Botswana.

In a huge herd of perhaps fifty elephants at the water in DumaTau Bush Camp, Botswana,

a one week old elephant stayed close to his mother.  (The rest of the herd are to the right.)

  

An elephant showed impressive trunk dexterity to strip the tasty cambium layer off a tree.

Animals will sometimes walk right past the safari vehicle without any interest or concern.

So long as the guests stay seated and are quiet, the animals think, "I have been seeing four-wheeled animals like that since I was born and they never hurt me, so I will just ignore them

and go about my business."

And, at DumaTau Bush Camp on the Linyanti River in Botswana, 

guess whose tent the elephant strolled past late in the afternoon.

Out of the Jurisdiction: Sundown in Africa

 Hi, folks.  In Zambia for a couple of days, with spotty wifi and power, 

but spotty wifi is better than none.

There is an elephant near the bottom middle of the image, but I wasted a lot of time

trying to get his dark body to stand out against the dark tree line.  I gave up.

The Lily Pulitzer brand has long been famous for hot pink and lime green "preppy" resort wear.
Mary Jo spent decades raising five children in New Jersey.  A year ago she walked past Naples'

Lily Pulitzer clothing store and saw a "help wanted" sign.  She now works part time

and loves the chance to meet and help people.
