Americans have always flown the flag. After 9/11, it seemed that even more Americans flew it.
Today it confuses me. When I see an American flag flown conspicuously on a day that is not a national holiday, I wonder about it. Is the person conventionally patriotic? Or a Trump supporter?

Probably the latter.
Americans seem to be big flag wavers compared to the rest of the world.
There is no way to tell. The American flag is a symbol that belongs to all U.S. citizens, and should not be appropriated by the conservative right wing extremists.
Oh my gosh my exact thoughts, in fact it troubles me that I feel that way especially growing up knowing the importance of our flag. I have determined though, since we have the flag flying from our house as does every other family member since my birth that I know of, we are patriotic and those large oversized flags that pick-up trucks have flying usually in pairs, I feel they're trump supporters, and usually there are other signs, like the trump flag too. Very sad, how those make me feel.
Wouldn't it be nice if nobody abused symbols...but we know that isn't likely to happen. I think the new meanings that people come up with are some weird things. Remember when art which included flags was questionable? And the anti-Vietnam War protestors and others who burned flags. It's almost unpatriotic to fly one these days! Depending on your definition of patriotism.
Wow! Someone thinks flying a flag on a day that is not a national holiday is a Trump supporter? I hate to think that's true. I do agree that the ones I believe a Trumpees are those flying from pickup trucks. We fly ours proudly daily because we are patriotic. I'd really vomit if any of my neighbors thought I might be a Trump person. Totally opposite.
The barn one looks over the top. Not sure about the second one.
