Public Safety Complex

Hartford opened its new Public Safety complex last week.  The complex is a sprawling series of brick buildings near the downtown, between the interstate highway and the North End.  It houses police, fire and ambulance services, as well as a jail and courts.

You saw it twice in 2011, once when I showed some of the scaffolding and later when I showed a bunch of construction workers clowning around.

It snowed yesterday in Hartford . . . this photo was taken in November.

Interesting that so much is housed in one area.

Impressive but horribly bleak.

P.S. Now there's more storage space on Picassa, am back to blogging daily on my old site of Message in a Milk Bottle

Interesting idea for all those services to be close to each others.

The last couple of years was a good time to build public works because construction prices were lower, as construction companies were bidding so low just to try to keep their doors open.

Handsome buildings, but I have to agree with Lucy. "Serious and important" do not have to be colorless and dreary.

It looks like a jail alone...

Great looking building, but I hope they plan on adding some landscaping! Right no I agree with Ciel -- looks like a jail alone!

I think we need to see a winter version now.

I guesss this red building must be more beautyful when surrounded by snow..

Somehow there is a strange feel to this. Lego comes to mind, don't know why. It will be fun to see the place when the landscape has been sorted :).

I guess it is practical to have all these things together...

It looks very stark Jack but I guess it's aim is to provide multiple services to the public. Im wondering what you think about having them all housed in the same complex? ... a good move or not.

A fine strong building which a bit of landscaping will enhance!

Looks like they tried to make it a period piece Fits right in.

A nice building, but it is really drab.

Nice looking place. Snow? Lucky you.

So barren, although I'm sure they will put down turf in the spring. Sort of one stop shopping for the cop in your life.

A complete stop for all services! Needs some landscaping.

That's an impressive complex, Jack. Love all the red brick. I wonder how many years ago this was planned and the funding was in place.

The building looks great to me!
But what about planting some trees around?

Public safety looks completely isolated and deserted.

The clocktower helps, but it does need some landscaping!
