Hyland was in a gallery when I visited recently, and he agreed to be photographed. I asked him which painting he wanted behind him. He picked "Portrait of Madame T." I showed and explained it last year, too. This painting was on a long-term loan to NBMAA. Five months ago the museum bought it.

I vividly recall the portrait because of your May post of Madame T. I also had just finished the book, Strapless: John Singer Sargent and the Fall of Madame X, about the Sargent portrait that was an inspiration for this particular portrait. Hard to imagine that a painting with a plunging neckline (the Madame X painting) could ruin someone's reputation! The Director will be very successful because of his people skills!
Has he got a Swedish surname?

An excellent photograph of Douglas. Was this an event the museum put on for it's members? I know the Nelson-Atkins has special events for it's members and are quite enjoyable to attend. Mr Hyland looks extremely happy.
