I know how it feels! There are cameras everywhere around here.

If the cameras are at intersections to deter people from running red lights, it is a good thing.

I hope you are having a good trip. I have been away and was not able to comment recently, as my son who lives in Argentina got married on a Caribbean island in the midst of a cruise. My fondness for checking my favorite daily photo sites was subordinated to the family activities and the price of internet access on the ship.

Sometimes it's good like when there has been a crime but it still makes me uncomfortable!

These are just for intimidation purposes. West Hartford can't use them for traffic enforcement, it's against the law, so they only cost money, not raise it. In addition, in Connecticut you have to ticket the driver, not the vehicle, so they're doubly useless. As for traffic control, if it takes someone more than one signal change to get through any intersection in town that's a front page story.

There's even a set of these (useless) cameras at the intersection of Memorial and Raymond Roads. Know what else is at that intersection? The Police Department!! Why look out the window when you can use a camera?

Of particular note is that Avon, a neighboring town, had a horrific runaway truck accident at the bottom of a large hill (>10%) that starts in West Hartford, killing 4 people in 2005. Avon asked the town to install traffic cameras on the West Hartford side of Avon Mountain to monitor trucks. The same mayor who later installed these cameras declined, because he saw no useful purpose for them.

I assume these are red light cameras?

Bellingham's in the middle of a initiative and legal battle to overturn the mayor's decision to install red light cameras. The decision cost him his job last month.

The cameras monitor the intersection for movement and adjust the timing of the lights/left turn signals.
