Community Garden

Does your city have community gardens?  Many city dwellers in Hartford don't have the space to grow vegetables at their own homes, so they rent the use of small plots of land in community gardens scattered around the city.  This community garden is next to the Church of the Good Shepherd.

Does the church own this property, too.? Providing space for community gardens is a good deed regardless of who owns it, I guess. St. Paul has many of these sites throughout our city...wonder if this is a new city-phenomenon? Your photo is interesting, not only because of the community garden but the juxtaposition of the modern buildings beyond the church emphasizes its unique architecture.

I can't think of one in Phoenix. There is a home near downtown where the whole yard is a garden but, I don't think it's a community effort. I do know that there is one up north in the tiny town of Yarnell. I visited it once.

My mom use to do this when we lived on Air Force Bases growing up. We always had a plot in one of the community gardens. Nice to see the city providing this.

They do something similar to this in parts of Boston too. The church is quite impressive looking.

There are some places like this in parts of Seattle. Here in our complex there large planting boxes on the roof where people can grow veggies, flowers. It also makes for a lovely place to sit and watch 360 degree views of the skies! Hope your week is off to a good start, Jack!

We have Jones Valley Urban Farm in the downtown area and maybe some small gardens where neighbors share the land. I love this old fence . A great idea!

I honestly don't know. I do remember one place in Lisbon where you can see something similar from the metro, but I have no idea if it's a comunity garden.

No, sadly not. There is something somewhere tended by elderly people but they told me that it is a bureaucratic nightmare... (Yes we have bureaucracy even there!)

Yes, there's a community garden here in SRQ-ville. (Actually, I think there are several.) I don't think our gardens have such a beautiful building on the perimeter, though. I've thought about venturing out to get some garden photos....***drat***....the HDP editorial staff beat me to it!

We have a few. I have seen at least three, they are very popular.

I think there are some but they are hidden by shrubs, trees, you name it... I think community gardens are a blessing.

We have these community allotment gardens sprinkled about all over the city. They are very popular and there is always a waiting list to get a plot. Wonderful idea!

I love that there are community gardens in most of the towns around me. It provides an opportunity for people who would not be able to grow their own food or flowers otherwise. Great shot.

That's a lovely looking church and a good spot for a garden. We have some community gardens in Portland, Maine and I think we could sustain many more of them.

The big town south of East Gwillimbury (Newmarket) has a good-sized community garden. I think it;s a wonderful idea.
