Parrish liberally used white roses in that painting to recall the bouquets that mourners placed in memory of the victims of September 11. For his new painting in the New Britain museum, Parrish again used white roses to memorialize a recently deceased friend.
Isn't it remarkable that a noted young American artist in 2010 can and does paint simple white flowers with the kind of quality and detail first used by Dutch masters five centuries ago?

He is a genius and will only be turning 40 in April... Have you seen his 18' mural of The Cycle of Terror and Tragedy? If I get to your area again I will definitely make the effort to see it... He is an amazing artist with the artistic personality of the old masters.

An old subject seen with a modern eye by an srtist with the skills of the Old Masters.
This came up on my google alerts. I can't thank you enough for posting this and all of the kind words. The New Britain Museum of Art is a forward thinking museum with fantastic community outreach.
I prefer white roses to the traditional lilies for mourning. The roses seem to be so much more positive and warm.
