Sunflowers at Buttonwood Farms

Buttonwood Farms operates an ice cream stand in Griswold, Connecticut,
in the eastern part of the state, on the way to Rhode Island.  They raise
sunflowers, which they sell in July to support a children's charity.
I missed the festival this year, but not the sunflowers.

R.I.P. Prospect Cafe

The Prospect cafe is a neighborhood bar, restaurant and hangout on the Hartford-West Hartford line that has been around forever.  OK, just 48 years.  Operated by the same family for all that time.

But, business is slow.  (People not drinking enough any more? . . . really?)  So, on Saturday night there will be a party and it will close.

Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik was a very happy surprise.  It is a walled seaside city on a peninsula in southern Croatia.  Serbia is in the hills just five miles away.  After Yugoslavia broke up in 1991, Serbia became aggressive and bombed Dubrovnik for months.  The old city suffered a lot of damage, but today most of the damage has been repaired.  If the roofs are red, they are new, post-bombing.  If they are tan, they are old and survived.

Dubrovnik has a marvelous series of high city walls.  A wall walk around the city is a can't miss experience.

Windham Court House

You choose.  Black and white?

Or color?

I nearly always prefer color, but the black and white version has good clarity
and contrast and is pretty nice, too.  Then again, the original color
version looks like a 1930s postcard.

Windham is half an hour east of Hartford.  Same place as last week's frog bridge.

The 387 Houses of Peter Fritz, Insurance Clerk from Vienna

In 1993 the artist Oliver Croy was looking through the contents of a junk shop.  He found 387 miniature hand-made buildings, each in its own trash bag.  The houses were meticulously crafted by an unknown Viennese insurance clerk, Peter Fritz.  They were built from inexpensive materials like cardboard, foil, scraps of wallpaper and matchboxes.  They do not appear to be specific real houses but each is a kind of house or store or bank building or other structure that might have been built in Fritz's Austria.  Each is different.

Croy and his friend Oliver Elser, an architectural critic, preserved the buildings and presented them in the 2013 Biennale in Venice.  Despite thousands of artistic works created by professional artists, these miniature houses made by an idiosyncratic clerk for his own enjoyment were my favorite pieces in the Biennale.

Mindblowing!

This Makes Me Mad

The woman who lives in this Avon house works in her yard fourteen hours a day most days.  For years she has opened her house and gardens several times a year to raise funds for local charities.  Last year a woman suffered a minor injury when she tripped during the garden tour, where the path was level and maintained far better than most of us maintain our yards.  The homeowner and insurance companies offered to pay for her medical bills, but the injured woman's husband brought a lawsuit anyways.  Because of the litigation and increased insurance premiums, the homeowner can no longer afford to open the beautiful house and gardens to the public.

No good deed is unpunished.

Nifty Fifties at Elizabeth Park

This week was the first outdoor concert at Elizabeth Park in several weeks.  The previous ones had to go inside because it was either too hot or too rainy.  The outdoor concerts are always fun.  The band this week was Nifty Fifties.
