Out of the Jurisdiction: Kinderdijk

Nineteen windmills at Kinderdijk ("Children's Dike") comprise a Unesco World Heritage Site.  The Netherlands would have returned to the sea without the invention of windmills to pump water from the developed areas, up to the rivers and on to the sea.  These days, steam and diesel machines do the work, but the windmills remain.

I return late today.  New photos from Hartford should begin on Tuesday, though I will no doubt sprinkle in occasional photos from the trip.

Out of The Jurisdiction: Amsterdam

Days 1 - 3 were in Amsterdam, before boarding the ship bound for Cologne and beyond.  There are bicycles everywhere.

I am still away, returning on Sunday.  I have posts scheduled while I am away.  Who knows?  Maybe I will sneak in more photos from the trip . . .

Cross-Town Rivalry

West Hartford has two high schools.  When the two teams met in football late in November, the Conard Chieftains were undefeated (9 -0) and rated third among Connecticut's big schools.  The Hall Warriors were rated fifth with only one loss (8-1).

Hall won the game 20-0.  On the last play of the game, a Hall player in blue-and-white intercepted a pass and ran it back fifty yards for the third and final touchdown.  It looked like the intended receiver from Conard gave the play the "touchdown" sign when the other player still had fifty yards to run.

On the first day of each month, City Daily Photo bloggers show photographs illustrating a theme.  For December, it is "action shot."   Click here to view thumbnails for all participants.

The Old Guard

The local newspaper had a notice last Tuesday, indicating that The Old Guard was meeting at the Westminster Presbyterian Church at 10 a.m.  The Old Guard was described as an organization for retired businessmen.

I imagined six stooped old guys in plaid shirts playing cards.  I thought they might make a good picture.  So, I put on an old sweater and jeans, grabbed my camera, and went.

The Old Guard has 300 members.  They attend lectures, perform charitable work like delivering meals to the elderly and infirm, and organize outings.  And, they wear nice jackets and ties.

I took a couple pictures and sneaked out of there.  If I can find a jacket and tie, I might go back some time . . .

So, what do you think we should do?
