Escobar

Escobar watched me take pictures.  He speaks Spanish and I don't, so we used hand gestures to communicate.

A gentle, friendly man.

Vintage Baseball

Hartford hosts vintage baseball teams from around New England a couple of times each summer.  The players wear old uniforms, use old baseballs and bats, pitch underhand, and don't use baseball gloves in the field.
With the emphasis on nostalgia and history, it seems to be a sports version of the war re-enactments that we see occasionally.

A Man and His Trowel

Back in Elizabeth Park.  The tulip bulbs have been removed from the annual garden, new soil has been added to several beds, and they are ready for re-planting.  Here is the first bed to receive its summer plants.

Community Garden

Does your city have community gardens?  Many city dwellers in Hartford don't have the space to grow vegetables at their own homes, so they rent the use of small plots of land in community gardens scattered around the city.  This community garden is next to the Church of the Good Shepherd.

Church of the Good Shepherd

The Church of the Good Shepherd was founded in 1868 by Elizabeth Colt, widow of Samuel Colt, in memory of three of their children who died in infancy.  Colt was a wealthy manufacturer of firearms.

Jack Likes to Work

You met Jack last winter when he was shoveling snow.  Jack had his 80th birthday a few days ago.  He does yard work nearly every day.  Now is the season for Jack to mow the lawn and pull weeds.  (At the same time.)

When Jack saw me taking his picture, he went inside to change his clothes. Jack wanted to have his picture taken in a Northwestern cap and shirt.  Two of  Jack's granddaughters are lacrosse stars at the national level.  The older one played on the Northwestern lacrosse team that won college's national championships four years in a row, and the younger one plays on the current team that won the national women's lacrosse championship last weekend.

After I wrote this post, I went back outside.  Jack was back in his work clothes, balancing a huge ladder against a tree and trimming the lower branches.

After dinner, Jack decided he needed more exercise, so he climbed on his bicycle and went out for a five mile ride.

And you think YOU are active and fit!
