Intimate Strangers

Karen and I barely know each other, but we know each other very well.  We live in the same community though we don't spend time together.  But we are Facebook friends and Instagram connections, so all the time I see where she is and what she is doing and who she is doing it with.  And she sees my photos.

A few days ago we ran into each other "in real life" and talked for a while.  We remarked about how odd it is to know so much about one another without knowing each other.  She said we are "intimate strangers," which I think is perfect.  It fits the relationships we have with some people whom we have never met or have rarely met, but with whom we have longstanding online relationships.

Jack, what a wonderful post. Indeed, there are so many people that I have met online and that somehow have become friends and yes, intimate strangers.

Jack, it is always good to know your neighbors. Doing so creates a sense of community.
