Age is No Barrier (Continued): 8. Newell

Newell is a nephrologist who spent most of his medical career in Virginia and retired early to Florida.
(I had to look it up, too . . . nephrologists treat illnesses of the kidneys.)
As a youth, Newell stuttered.  The stuttering went away when he was doing ventriloquism.

Newell's newest puppet is Lester, an alcoholic with a red nose, bleary eyes and a bit of stubble.  Newell performs a couple of times a year with other doctors in talent shows for local charities.

After retiring to Naples, where he plays golf and reads voraciously, Newell (74) realized he missed being a doctor and that there were many residents who needed help.  So, he became a volunteer physician at the Neighborhood Health Clinic, which provides very low cost medical care for underprivileged, working and uninsured members of the community.
Newell volunteers in the clinic one or two days a week.

I can see how it would be hard to totally give up on a rewarding career, it's really good that many retirees don't have to these days. This is an inspiring series of posts Jack.

I'm surprised ventriloquism could have that kind of effect on stuttering.

Good for him. We have a couple of clinics like that in our area. The doctors are dedicated but the offices are sadly lacking in resources.
