Dying Mangroves

Mangrove trees provide nursery habitat for fish and shellfish, and foraging spots for wading birds.
They sit in brackish water and take oxygen through their roots.  They need a flow
of water.  Mud build-ups deplete the oxygen and kill the mangroves.

75 years ago a state highway was built through a big stand of mangroves, southeast of Naples.
The roadway has stopped the flow, drainage is poor, and more than 100 acres of mangroves
have died.  A study proposes to elevate the highway, cut culverts under the highway,
dredge trenches, and take other actions to flush the area and restore the ecosystem.
There is funding for early phases but a lot more money is needed.

Paul

Paul operates a gallery and frame shop on Sanibel Island.
He has framed several things for me over the years.

This year he framed a big 1927 vintage poster of Capri for me.
Remember seeing it a month ago?

Fifth Avenue South

Fifth Avenue South is one of the two main shopping and dining streets in Naples.
The "Season" is from January through Easter.
It can be quiet now, before the hordes descend.

Meghan and Atlas

Meghan works in Blue Mussel, a jewelry and gift store on Naples' Fifth Avenue South.  Her dog,
Atlas, is a nine month old silver labrador that stays in the store while Meghan works.

Chase

Chase works at my favorite Starbucks in Naples.  On Halloween he was there to show
his girls to his co-workers.  While there, he paid the bill for everyone standing
in line, including me.  I told him I would accept only if
I could take a photo of the girls and him.

Chase's generosity prompted me to give $20 to the barista to cover the guests when
Chase's money ran out.  Plus a $5 tip for the barista.
Pay it forward.

Beret

Beret is enjoying the warmth of a three-week vacation in Naples before returning to a cold winter in Munich.  She was walking on Naples Beach, near the Naples Pier.

Naples Pier

Swimming.  Sailing.  Sunning.  Fishing.  People watching.
Plenty to do at the Naples Pier.

The Naples Pier has been here since the 1880s when the only way to get here was by boat.

On the first day of each month, City Daily Photo bloggers show photographs based on a theme.
For November, the theme is "landmark."  Click here to see other interpretations.
