West Farms

West Farms Mall is a large covered shopping mall at the intersection of Farmington, West Hartford and New Britain.

Alphabet Spire VI is a 28-foot high sculpture by William Crutchfield.  It has stood outside the J. C. Penney store since West Farms opened in 1974.

New Britain Post Office

So many New England post offices seem to be in classical art deco buildings from the 1930s.  This is the entrance to the Post Office building in New Britain.

Hartford Public Library

Hartford Public Library has a well-lit reading room with colorful photo murals from Hartford on the walls.  I rested my camera on a glass-topped table to take this photo.  Nice reflection, isn't it?

Out of the Jurisdiction: Plantin-Moretus Museum

I finished my short series of photos from the Netherlands and Belgium without showing anything from the wonderful Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp.  My bad.

The Plantin and Moretus families established a printing business in Antwerp in the 16th century and operated it successfully as a family-run business for more than 300 years.  The secret to their success was that in each generation they selected the most talented son to run the business, not necessarily the oldest.  The elegant family home occupies an entire block in Antwerp.

Today the museum in the family home houses the two oldest existing printing presses with moveable type, the company's archives, a huge collection of books from the earliest days of printing, a massive library, and centuries of artwork, furniture and household effects.  It is worth setting aside several hours to appreciate the artistry of the books they produced.

The Creative Artisan

Kathleen Hede/Bradford painted in oils for more than thirty years.  One day she was asked to make a mixed media assemblage of different colored objects, and she was hooked.  No more oils.  Kathleen has a studio and gallery in Bonita Springs, Florida.  Her website is here.

On the first day of each month, City Daily Photo bloggers post photos on a theme.  For May, the theme is "the creative artisan."  To see other bloggers' interpretations of this theme, click here.

Fruit and Cheese

This wonderful fruit and cheese plate was served last fall at the bistro associated
with Infinity Music Hall in Norfolk, Connecticut.

Infinity Music Hall is opening a new location for music and food on Front Street in
downtown Hartford early in 2014.  Construction began last month.
If our meal and our visit to the music hall last fall were any
indications, they will receive a hearty welcome!
