Sunflowers at Buttonwood Farms

Buttonwood Farms operates an ice cream stand in Griswold, Connecticut,
in the eastern part of the state, on the way to Rhode Island.  They raise
sunflowers, which they sell in July to support a children's charity.
I missed the festival this year, but not the sunflowers.

  1. I'm always amazed when I see a field of sunflowers and you have captured that amazement in your photo. PS: They remind of a movie I saw when I was kid. The Day of the Triffids.

  3. Did you know that the sunflower is the state flower of Kansas and the national flower of the Ukraine? Thought you'd like to know this bit of vital information. Sometimes considered a weed, I love its sunny appearance. I wonder what product is made from this farm's yield and what charity they support?

  16. These seem like the consummate summer flowers. Though I've seen them sold in our area, I haven't seen a lot of them flourishing in gardens. Maybe it's not warm enough? My attempt to grow some in our claycrete soil would have been a great embarrassment if they'd gotten large enough to wither and fail but they didn't even make it that far.
