R.I.P. Prospect Cafe

The Prospect cafe is a neighborhood bar, restaurant and hangout on the Hartford-West Hartford line that has been around forever.  OK, just 48 years.  Operated by the same family for all that time.

But, business is slow.  (People not drinking enough any more? . . . really?)  So, on Saturday night there will be a party and it will close.

  1. That's a pity Jack .... 48 years in the same family! I'm sure they will appreciate a sleep-in.

  3. It is always sad to see neighborhood businesses close.

  4. So sad, Jack. A neighborhood spot in an area of Portland where a friend at work lives has done the same thing, for the same reasons. Makes those who consider such spots important in their lives so sad.

  7. Oh, that is sad news indeed! And it is happening with so many "old" places and we are the losers!! Hope your week is going well, Jack!

  9. Aww, that's sad. Probably fewer people drinking, than driving home since we were kids, that's for sure. If we can't walk home or have a ride, we don't even have a glass of wine. Too much is at stake for all concerned. What is nice is being in a hotel, having dinner nearby, and enjoying a good glass of wine with good food.

  11. That is super sad! Maybe they are just ready to retire and get some drinks at another bar? :)

  12. Such a shame Jack, I reckon it must be so tough running a small business these days. Some are just lucky, they hit the right spot and are mega popular, others struggle to make ends meet..I guess it'll be too late if everyone has a fabulous time on Saturday night and realises what they'll be missing if it closes :)

  14. That's sad Jack! I hope they own the building and are selling up and retiring to be snowbirds like others we know!

  15. I hate it when old businesses stop.

I would have thought people drank more and more...

  16. Oh no! Same sort of thing is happening here. But your lovely cafe looks just too sweet to close down. RIP indeed! (PS. I didn't know that Rolling Rock comes in cans...oh my.)

  18. Another one bites the dust. Really, it's enough to make one resolve to become far more dedicated to going out and helping the bottom lines of such establishments. That is, if one were so inclined...

  19. Kay has the right idea; I'd gladly stop in there and try their Rolling Rock on a regular basis.

  21. Pity. I hate to see old neighborhood joints close. This one looks so nice and up to date. Not hip enough? Or maybe not loud enough? Raise a toast for me.
