On September 24, I explained the State of Connecticut's program to fund new public murals in eight cities. New Britain's mural is on a building near the intersection of Main Street and Columbus Boulevard. In addition to state funding, the New Britain Museum of American Art and the estate of the artist, Sol Lewitt, contributed financial support.
Lewitt moved to New Britain as a child, attended New Britain schools and was loyal to his home town throughout his life. He became one of the most prominent American artists of the 20th century. This mural is Wall Drawing #1105, "Colored bands of arcs from four corners." I have shown Sol Lewitt wall paintings at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford here and here. There will be more . . .
This post is linked to Monday Murals.
If Willy Wonka had wall murals, this would be at his factory. The vibrant colors and arches will wake you up on a Monday morning!
ReplyDeleteLove this one!
ReplyDeleteI really like this one! Such a nice burst of colour. You can't pass this up without feeling a little cheered. :)
ReplyDeleteIt makes me think of rainbows! I'd really enjoy photographing this from different angles.
ReplyDeleteHard to go wrong with rainbows of colour!
ReplyDeleteI love the rainbows and how could you not be cheered up looking at this!! Now this is an uplifting capture for the day, Jack, and a great start for my day!
ReplyDeleteWow! Pass this on your way to work in the AM and you wouldn't need your morning coffee wake-up!
ReplyDeleteBright, cheerful, and amazing!
ReplyDeletethis is very cool. it reminds me of the art the father of a friend used to make (though his wasn't quite so elaborate)
ReplyDeleteWonderful! Simple but so effective.
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely you all think Britian is this colourful.
ReplyDeleteAll I need now is some Jim Morrison. Or some Janis Joplin.
ReplyDeleteI just love how you captured an appreciative spectator.
ReplyDeleteI rather like this - might make me crash if I was driving though! Love that little child exploring it with his hands as well as eyes.
ReplyDeleteWow, you can't miss this one. I love it.
ReplyDeleteI like this color in the environment. It reminds me of the Partridge Family...though I don't know why. Wrong color/pattern for them.
ReplyDeleteGreat colors, and a great idea for the state to sponsor murals throughout the state.
ReplyDeleteControlled, structured, yet almost psychedelic. Vibrant doesn't begin to describe this mural. It's pleasing to hear the state is sponsoring public murals. Looking forward to seeing what else you've found for us. Thanks for contributing to Monday Mural.
ReplyDeleteWow, I absolutely adore this one Jack!
ReplyDeleteThat will get your attention for sure. I like the colors but it doth make me a wee bit dizzy. Ok, dizzier!
ReplyDeleteEye teaser for sure!
ReplyDeleteNot bad, I like this one!
ReplyDeleteLove this. I am more drawn to his B&W work, but this is really fun. Was it painted by someone else or a reproduction pasted up?
ReplyDeletea kind of psychedelic sensation! :)
ReplyDeleteLéia
So beautiful! And so colorful!
ReplyDeleteMakes me think of the paintings by Robert and Sonia Delaunay!
