Trinity College occupies an attractive but inward-looking campus south of downtown Hartford, ringed by low income neighborhoods. "Town and gown" issues plague many privileged educational institutions in poorer cities, and Trinity is no exception. Two weeks ago a carful of local men beat a Trinity student badly in the early hours of morning. That has reignited a dialog between those who urge more campus security at the cost of even greater separation of the campus from the neighborhood, and those who think that Trinity should not and cannot fence off the outside world.
But, at this troubled time for Trinity, I am just going to show you carvings . . .

ReplyDeleteI love the buffalo carving. I carved one about that size and my son has it now. A buffalo will always stop me.

ReplyDeleteI went to college in an urban environment, at George Washington University, 4 blocks from the White House. There were issues with crime in D.C., and the University implemented security measures such as lots of public phones with direct access to campus police, but there was no way to separate the campus from the community. In fact, access to the D.C. community was one of the strengths of the educational opportunities available.
ReplyDeleteJack, how could I not love your shot of the buffalo finial? The American Bison is emblematic of South Dakota. Keep them coming! Town-gown issues can be difficult, but must be faced with as much dialog as possible. Fences are no answer. Look at the Great Wall of China.

Lovely carvings Jack. Often, like Steffe says, when the fences come down everyone interacts more and more people are out and about and areas become safer. Rather than hiding behind bunkers.

ReplyDeleteUnfortunately there are those who inflict violence on others. I don't understand this, one thing I love is the ability to walk on any college or university campus for photos. I cannot remember ever running into restrictions. This is a rough dilemma.
