Hunter's Pew End

The Hunter's pew end features a buffalo.

Trinity College occupies an attractive but inward-looking campus south of downtown Hartford, ringed by low income neighborhoods.  "Town and gown" issues plague many privileged educational institutions in poorer cities, and Trinity is no exception.  Two weeks ago a carful of local men beat a Trinity student badly in the early hours of morning.  That has reignited a dialog between those who urge more campus security at the cost of even greater separation of the campus from the neighborhood, and those who think that Trinity should not and cannot fence off the outside world.

But, at this troubled time for Trinity, I am just going to show you carvings . . .

  1. You can never solve a problem using a fence.

  3. The carvings you have posted yesterday and today are quite magnificent. It has reached the point where I often dread opening up our newspapers because of the senseless violence such as you describe Where is all this anger coming from??!!

  4. I love the buffalo carving. I carved one about that size and my son has it now. A buffalo will always stop me.

After I was hacked I had to give up my old user name and the blogs that went with it. My Birds Blog was among the give-ups.

So this is the new birds blog and I hope you can come visit. Birds Birds Birds and Birds

  5. I am glad you are going on with these wonderful carvings. In my humble opinion, where there are no barriers a pervasive ugliness prevails...

  7. I went to college in an urban environment, at George Washington University, 4 blocks from the White House. There were issues with crime in D.C., and the University implemented security measures such as lots of public phones with direct access to campus police, but there was no way to separate the campus from the community. In fact, access to the D.C. community was one of the strengths of the educational opportunities available.

  8. Jack, how could I not love your shot of the buffalo finial? The American Bison is emblematic of South Dakota. Keep them coming! Town-gown issues can be difficult, but must be faced with as much dialog as possible. Fences are no answer. Look at the Great Wall of China.

  9. The carvings are incredible, the situation is sad -- like so many similar ones everywhere these days! I hope things get better and that this wonderful, beautiful place doesn't suffer. Hope your week is going well, Jack!

  11. Lovely carvings Jack. Often, like Steffe says, when the fences come down everyone interacts more and more people are out and about and areas become safer. Rather than hiding behind bunkers.

  15. Unfortunately there are those who inflict violence on others. I don't understand this, one thing I love is the ability to walk on any college or university campus for photos. I cannot remember ever running into restrictions. This is a rough dilemma.

I am quite fond of bison and love this carving, a magnificent chapel indeed.

  18. interesting debate! A great divide between two classes become even more apparent when they perpetuate their own stereotypes.

  19. I've never seen a buffalo in a church too, but it is a beautiful carving, I like it!
    Great photo composition, Jack!

  20. Beautiful carvings set against such sad words. If only such disputes could be settled by a challenge to carve the most attractive pew end.

  21. Awesome carving. Sad to hear about the student being beaten. If Trinity and the Hartford community come up with a solution to the violenc, let me know me!

  22. The story is thought-provoking.
I don't believe in the fence-in option. Everyone has much to lose in the process.
