This library is in Washington, Connecticut. A 1914 ceiling by Siddons Mowbray is wonderful. The four panels are based on classic stories about Ceres, Proserpine, Mercury and Pluto. It is a long story and I really didn't understand it. Sorry.
Fine stained glass windows are at the end of the hall.
I'd have to get a close look at it, but the original Greek myth explains the seasons. Hades abducts Persephone, daughter of Demeter, goddess of agriculture, for his wife. Zeus sends Hermes the messenger god to the underworld to intercede. It accounts for the time of winter and no growth.
ReplyDeleteThat mural is wonderful, though I didn't think it was the same story about Persephone & Demeter. Just don't have a better one to suggest. The building looks pretty ordinary to have such a ceiling and stained glass windows.
ReplyDeleteAmazing art in that building, Jack!
ReplyDeleteWonderful paintings on the ceiling and stained glass in the windows. This library is filled with art.
