The big shorebirds are attention-getters, but I am now trying to catch some of the smaller shorebirds.
A little time with Google informed me that these are killdeers, so named
because their two-note call sounds like kill - deer.

We have a similar bird, the Ringed Plover, but Killdeers turn up occasionally and cause much excitement among bird-watchers.

ReplyDeleteThey always seem like nice birds especially when they try to lead you away from their nests or their babies.
ReplyDeleteThese birds are occasionally sighted in the northern plains, but only in the summer time.
