Photographing the Photographer

My good friend Gunther is an excellent photographer.  He and his wife were also on my recent safari to Kenya and Tanzania.  I caught him getting ready to make a photograph in the Maasai village
we visited in the Amboseli National Park in the Rift Valley of Kenya.

The theme on September 1 for City Daily Photo bloggers is "Photographing the Photographer."

Ha, he sure looks like a tourist here.

Excellent shots for the theme Jack! I'm afraid if I tried to crouch down like that, I would never be able to get back up, especially holding my camera!

Gunther has a very serious lens on that camera! This is perfect for the theme Jack!

The second photo encapsulates my worries about photography. Until recently my photographs have centred on plants and insects but now I have moved to a town I have to decide how to treat people. There are places round the world where for the sake of knowing what is happening to it and its inhabitants, humans have to be included. This may be one such a case. But this photo also shows, very clearly, the issue of intrusion. Given that my own photographs are of no consequence, I could take pictures early in the morning when it is light but no-one yet around. But that would be a complete mis-representation of everyday life. If the photographs in this post hadn't been taken, I would have known less about the world; but I'm glad I'm not the man walking along.

Fascinating comments, esp from Lucy (directly above); I have to think about her analysis for awhile. I managed to post a theme day photo this morning, and I am enjoying the variety among the posters. Had to laugh at Lois' comment. Your trip must have been wonderful!

I feel the same way as Lucy does. Taking photos of people non instrusively is a challenge which I try to meet with my iPhone. Did you know that you can press the camera button with the control button on iPhone earplugs?

Magnificent images, showing us the atmosphere of the place and the presence of people adds drama, style and humanity to the photographs!

I'm very envious of Gunther's crouch. I hate to think of how I'd look trying to rise from such a position.

(Lucy Corrander makes valid points about intrusion. But I notice that Gunther is taking his photo from behind the man he's shooting. He's not getting into anyone's face or place, at least from the perspective I can see. I prefer to also shoot people unawares. I personally don't see anything wrong with what he's doing.)
