I was in Oklahoma City for the weekend. Some time was free on Sunday, so the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum was the choice. Great museum! Wish there was more time.
Visitors are met by The End of the Trail, a huge 1894 statue of a weary, slumping Native American warrior by James Earl Fraser, portraying the end of a proud and free people.
The museum has wonderful Western paintings and statues, but those galleries prohibited
photos and I was not feeling defiant. There were also galleries devoted to cowboy and
Native American artifacts like clothing, hats, weapons and other paraphernalia.
Rodeo performers were featured in quite a few galleries.
Hollywood cowboys got a whole wing, with displays featuring John Wayne, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Stewart, Kirk Douglas, Richard Widmark, Walter Brennan, etc. The handsome purple coat (above) was made for Robert Redford and was worn in a tongue-in-cheek Western movie.
However wonderful the cowboy museum is, I had a better reason for visiting Oklahoma City.
My handsome nephew Drew married the beautiful Katie in a pretty setting outside the city.
Best wishes for a long and happy marriage, Katie and Drew.
(iPhone photographs . . . I left the big camera back in Florida.)

Interesting museum. I grew up watching cowboy movies that were a feature on Saturdays. The best to Drew and Katie on their marriage.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous photo of the bride and groom! Congratulations to them! I love the museum too. That first shot is wonderful and goes nicely with one of the paintings by Fritz Scholder that I featured a few days ago.
ReplyDeleteIn the 1960s the BBC showed endless series of Waggon Train, Laramie, The Lone Ranger, Bonanza etc etc.....so I think I'd've been happy wandering round that museum. Best wishes to the newly-weds.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to the bride and groom!
ReplyDeleteThe sculpture at the entrance is very appealing.
That first shot is fabulous, Jack! Best wishes to the bride & groom!
ReplyDeleteA wedding's always a great excuse to travel and share a happy event. Congratulations to the happy couple.
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a great museum with interesting exhibits.
That first sculpture is quite a powerful image. Congrats to the happy couple!
ReplyDeleteI like all the "air" and light coming in in the top image.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes and congratulations to the married couple.
Yup I agree, the first shot is super fab Jack and very deserving of it's prime position in the gallery. Lovely shot of you nephew and new bride, ah! Young love, wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI find that first white sculpture very moving. I'd be interested in the museum. Like John, I grew up with Cowboys and Indians films but the reality was, I think, a bit different. And yes, a lovely wedding photo; you can barely tell any difference between a phone photo and a DSLR photo, at least online. Printing them is a different matter.
ReplyDeleteThat statue has always impressed me and I was thrilled on one of our return trips from Santa Fe to be able to visit the museum and to see it. The museum is a marvel; quite la collection. I hope that you also got to see the Memorial site, which is awesome in a very different way. Love the photo of the bride and groom; fun to imagine them having a long and loving life together. I'm back posting again after a very sad week.
