The Bomb Shelter is Gone

Most of the houses in my neighborhood are quite nice.  But, there are a few exceptions.
The most conspicuous exception was "the bomb shelter," an odd low structure built during the Cold War's fascination in the 1950s with the potential for a nuclear holocaust.

For the past two weeks, a developer's equipment has been demolishing the bomb shelter.  Now all that remains is clean-up and then construction of a new home that will fit better with its neighbors.

  1. Send the wrecking crew to my neighbourhood. There are few bomb shelter homes here.

  2. Lets hope the paranoid builders of the Bomb Shelter are never proved right.

  4. A welcome change Jack. I'm sure whatever they build will be easier-on-the-eyes than the bomb-shelter.

  5. Just hope that the new house will fit into the neighborhood; lately we have had too-large houses built on lots that are too small for the structures and none of them in keeping with the character of the neighborhood. Good luck on this one~

  6. Sounds like good riddance. One and a half bathrooms - huh?

  7. Ah, good riddance indeed and let's hope there is never a need for a bomb shelter in the future -- these days it's a little difficult to be wholly certain that there won't be a need in the near future!! Hope you have a great new week!!

  8. You will have to show us what the new house looks like when it's done.

  9. I remember those Cold War days well. As student we were drilled in how to hid under our desks if we were attacked by an atom bomb...hide under our desks!!!

  10. I hope they don't build a monster home in its place, Jack!

  11. Hopefully a beautiful home will be its replacement.

  12. My neighborhood in Queens had many buildings designated as fallout shelters in the 50s and 60s. I don't think they were stocked with food and water, though. If one thing doesn't get you the other will.

  13. It sounds like nearly anything would be an improvement so long as it's a decent scale to fit the lot. Never saw the old one but it certainly didn't sound like it was properly designed or engineered.

  14. I couldn't find a good picture of it, but just the name sounds unappealing. Hope the new house will be nicer!

  15. Why they didn't transform it in a fancy retro club?
