Columbia Street

150 years ago, Hartford was a center of manufacturing for sewing machines and bicycles
in the area that is now close to Aetna and the State Capitol.  One manufacturer
built workers' housing on Columbia Street in the neighborhood.

All units (except end units) are identical inside, but the exteriors have nice variations.
The front gardens were open for touring recently during "Hartford Blooms."

  2. They're some remarkably attractive properties for workers' housing; perhaps more for managers and foremen than the men on the factory floor?

  3. They have been maintained very well. I think I would have preferred an end unit. Hope that you took some photos of the interiors.

  13. It's like Saltaire, Jack! I bet those end units went to foremen. It's nice to see them so well maintained!

  14. Now that is the sort of architecture I love to see when traveling around America. Interesting concept.

  15. As RedPat says, just like Saltaire but a widely different style of houses. They still look nice properties though. I love the porches.
