Do Gates Turn a Big House into a Mansion?

It is hard to have a fancier pair of gates than this big house, don't you think?

This big house is in contention for fanciest gates,
and the house has a formal façade.  Is it big and imposing enough to be a mansion?

These gates are not as fancy, but they guard a very big and very imposing house.
It is a mansion, isn't it?

This one has a strong and imposing gate and the house is big and impressive.
I think we have found a mansion.

  3. Amazing! I'd lose my way before I got to the living room or the kitchen!! Nah, I'm not into big houses which is fortunate for me and for my kids and my bank account!! Incredible pics though, you do find the great ones, Jack!! Hope you've had a great weekend!

  4. That one in the third shot looks more like a castle than a mere mansion.
Wow, some spectacular "mansions" down your way.

  5. Brilliant work tracking down a mansion! I'm wondering why the owners of the first place bothered with that gate. While fancy, it's almost on top of the house. Besides, it looks like you can sashay right around the shrubbery, defeating the purpose of a gate. (Unless the purpose was to give it a mansion-look.) Not that I would turn my nose up at this place…(as long as it came with an escrow for maintenance, of course).

  6. A mansion is a dwelling of the lord of the manor. Since Americans don't have lords a leaping or manor houses, it has come to mean a large house of the wealthy. I believe the houses in your photos qualify, so yes, you have found mansions. They are beautiful, but their expense can be huge. Donald Trump must open the doors to his house, Mira Lago, to pay for its maintenance. Even he can't afford to own it without income. Fine photos and interesting post.

  7. Yes I think you might have found one. My preference goes to the third one. Reminds me of the Cotswolds somehow.

  13. At least these don't appear to be in gated communities so we can actually get a taste of what it might be like to be rich. ;)
