Historic Voluntown

Voluntown is a neighborhood in the town of Griswold, Connecticut, on the border with Rhode Island.  A colorful primitive-style mural greets people who stop in the center of town.  A metal graphic on a stand in front of the mural explains what is depicted.  I tried to find out who painted it but I was unsuccessful.

This post is linked to Monday Mural, a weekly feature of Oakland Daily Photo.

  1. I agree with Camera Girl... the mural has lots of detail to look at. It really bugs me when I can't find any info on the artist. Even when they leave their name on the mural it is sometimes difficult to find any information about them.

  2. I guess a mural showing visitors the attractions of a community should have a lot in it.

I am impressed by your initiative to do research regarding my comment the other day about people with unexpected backgrounds in athletics. The baseball player is Richard Mear.

  10. My father-in-law painted a number of murals. At his church in Seattle he prepared one or two and set up outlining so congregation members could paint much of it. It was in a primitive style like this, which makes me wonder if this one was a similar community effort/

  11. A lovely invitation to stop a while in this lovely town .... I'm sure if I were to be passing thru I would definitely stop and embrace a little of it's history.

  12. It's nice they also provided a bench so you could study the mural in comfort. It's a sweet composition that shows pride in their town. I'm surprised the guide to the mural fails to mention the artist. Definite oversight. Thanks, Jack, for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.
