The Basilica San Marco glistens in the evening. But, with all of the golden glory around me, I couldn't take my eyes off the dazzlingly beautiful stone floors. This image is supposed to show both the intricacy and the simplicity, while also suggesting the other visitors to the cathedral by their shadows.
The bottom photo shows what everyone else was looking at.
Gold in sky and mystery on the floor. What an impressive and marvellous place, so rich!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the link. I agree , the faraway view is enough..
Such a stunning city
ReplyDeleteTo imagine all this great work was done by hand without the aid of modern tools is amazing!
ReplyDeleteThe pattern in the first photo made eyes pop wide open. Otherwise my senses like it. In fact you did a great job with both shots. The second photo has so much detail in it. It looks like it was a challenge under low lighting conditions.
ReplyDeletewhat a feast, high and low. welcome home!
ReplyDeleteBrattcat is right - these are a feast for the senses. But I've heard the basilica is threatened by rising waters...say it isn't so.
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful sights you had in your vision. I found in these beautiful cities that I often get sensory overload and have to slow down and rest occasionally. The floor's design definitely is amazing. What other word can one use?!
ReplyDeleteThat first one would make a heck of a jigsaw puzzle. Whew!
ReplyDeleteMind boggling stone pattern on the floor, the result of highly skilled craftsman. The walls and ceiling are filled with art. Great images.
ReplyDeleteI was in there when the were turning on the lights and I have to say it is really amazing to see it light up and start glowing with the golden hue. Spectacular.
ReplyDeleteI do agree with the others -- a feast for the eyes indeed! What an amazing place and your captures are terrific, Jack!! Welcome home!!
ReplyDeleteFabulous!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. I have a coffee table book devoted just to the floors of the Basilica San Marco.
ReplyDeleteFantastic !
ReplyDeleteI remember it well! Beautifully show here and welcome back Jack..Venice..you lucky chap :)
ReplyDeleteGreat shots, they give the right idea of the place, and it is obviously forbidden to take pictures inside! But this is Italy...
ReplyDeleteLike that floor too! Did you go to the Biennale at all?
ReplyDeleteI've never been to Venice (yet) but I was dazzled by the floor of duomos in Tuscany. I think that I took more photos of the marble floors than I did of the splendours above.
ReplyDeleteOhhh, you went to Venice, my favourite city. There is so much to see - look up, look down, look all around.
ReplyDeleteStunning shots, Jack!
ReplyDeleteI must go to Venice.
Now that's what I call art!
ReplyDeleteThere is nowhere like Venice, one of the magic cities of the world!
ReplyDeleteMagnificent interior!
ReplyDeleteLéia
Sometimes the most interesting sights are the reverse of what everyone's looking at. At least that's what I tell myself when I go off on a goofy tangent. (Though that's not how I'd describe your first shot. It's very nice.)
ReplyDeleteAnother two brilliant photos.
ReplyDeleteI very like churches so it was a very good moment for me to see it today.
Thanks for sharing.
Greetings, Miklos
