On Sunday morning, Celebrate West Hartford! sponsored a 5K race. The seeded runners are on the front line at the start. Number 788 (the bearded runner at the left) won the race and number 3191 (in red at the right) was the first woman finisher.
Number 751 is only 12 years old but still came in 12th overall.
Sometimes the best drama is later in the race, where the runners are struggling to finish.
Some runners smile as they approach the tape, some grimace and sprint in the effort to finish one place higher.
And sometimes a child comes out of the crowd to help mom finish.
Wonderful set of photos!
ReplyDeleteDecades ago a student of mine from Ithaca High School finished the Boston Marathon. I was astonished because I didn't even know he ran. He only told me because he was going to miss a few classes! I wonder where he is now and hope he has had a wonderful life. I have a good feeling about him... I think he has been a quiet success at whatever he has touched.
It's a tough race for some. Good point about shooting the runners when thy are tired, makes for better photos!
ReplyDeleteThat little girl is so cute!!
ReplyDeleteMany of the runners look very determined. I don't think I could do something like this. :)
Love this series, Jack. Some much happening. Terrific shots here of the runners... they are a brave lot.
ReplyDeleteAwesome pictures Jack, well done!

I can't understand runners: I like to walk for miles but why I have to run if there isn't a fire or something bad? We have cars and bikes for that...
ReplyDeleteBy the way, it's just envy!
LOL at VP's comment! Great coverage of the event and great captures as well, Jack.
ReplyDeleteYou could just tell that 751 was going to do well! I would be one of the ones gasping for air at the end. ;-)
ReplyDeleteRunning with the pack, and then pulling away must be a great sensation.
ReplyDeleteCan't find an email on here for you so I'm forced to send a message here instead of privately. You mentioned in one of my earlier blogs that you noticed I had been reading Henning Mankell. I just finished The White Lioness by him. . . terrific mystery with international overtones: South Africa, Apartheid, assassination, international intrigue. Isn't Suzi in SA? You'd like this novel; one of his most complex.
Great captures for the day, Jack! I love the different expressions on the faces of the runners!! Looks like a great day for all! Have a good week!
ReplyDeleteYou got some really great shots of this race. I loved that #751 (the 12-year-old) is checking his watch as the race begins.
ReplyDeleteLove the child encouraging mom on!
ReplyDeleteVP said it... Your photos are cool though, showing all the effort and emotions and the little girl is soooo sweet!
ReplyDeleteExcellent crowd shots, Jack.
ReplyDeleteWe had our race weekend up here at the end of May. There's a five K run that draws a lot of people into it, among other races.
5 K .... I'd be lucky to walk it let alone run. Some fierce competition here Jack but I'd say it won't be many years before that 12 year old takes line honours.
ReplyDeleteI suppose there is an element of setting hard goals for yourself and meeting them, but this looks like torment to me. My son is about to run the Chicago marathon for the third time. There is some, um, generational gap here.
ReplyDeleteLove that last shot.
ReplyDeleteA great sense of community in this race
ReplyDeleteThe child "helping" her mom looks so serious and determined. And the guy over 80 has my complete respect. Don't think my knees could take it. Buon viaggio.
ReplyDeletethe last one is really cute!
ReplyDelete5K i can do... but thats about it...
I have a friend who runs while pushing her 4 year old twins in a stroller. Not easy!
