Toribio

Park Street is the center of Hartford's Hispanic community.  El Mercado is a small mall on Park Street housing a grocery store, restaurants, and a variety of shops selling clothing, music and other popular items.

Toribio is Dominican.  He manages La Plaza del Mercado, the grocery store in El Mercado.  We walked around for a while and he showed me some of the foods that customers can buy in his store.

  1. An interesting place to shop. What did you buy?

  2. I love visiting the Mercado in the predominantly Hispanic neighborhood of St. Paul. Now the large markets carry lots of traditional Hispanic foods but at one time that was the only place where I could buy what I wanted from their cuisine. It still is the best place to get some hard-to-find items. Our large Mercado has a restaurant/cafe which has authentic dishes that carry me back to México!

  5. I love your "people" shots from around your world, Jack! We have a variety of shops and stores like this here in Seattle as well! Hope your week is going well!

  6. Nice!

We love finding such stores and wandering around to pick something to sample. We also love Jungle Jim's just North of Cincinnati - and a new one on the East side - that has foods from around the world. We can even get a Norwegian foods fix there. :)

  7. American demographics are certainly changing. It would be nice to get some of those food choices up here, a ways north and west.

  8. Sounds like a good spot to try different foods, listen to music and generally soak up some Hispanic culture Jack.

  10. There are more & more of these foods in the regular grocery stores here. What a change from even 10 years ago!

  11. I'd have to look at the pictures on the packs as the words mean nothing to me. But the shopkeeper looks as though he'd be helpful.

  13. You are covering so much wonderful ground, Jack - we're really getting a sense of your city. And I echo the question - what did you buy? :)

  15. Nice portrait. I love that you have him pointing out a product. Btw, Goya black beans are the best!
