Read a Book or Pay My Taxes?

Reading a good book would be so much more enjoyable than paying taxes, but I have procrastinated long enough.  Today is the day.

I received an email from Matt Wood, the designor/director of the Torrington Mural shown a couple of weeks ago.  He tells me that it was a project for an After School Arts Program (ASAP) in Washington Depot, a small town near Torrington.  All of the people portrayed in the mural were student artists participating in the project.  And, the large "negative head" image is of Polly Doremus, an elderly lady who was active in the area and who co-founded a shelter for battered mothers.

It is always a pleasant surprise to hear from people who come across photos featured here.  And, even more, it is always fun to learn about the positive things that people do in their communities.  Not everyone is a Scrooge.

  1. Do you have people from Liberty Tax Service standing on street corners wearing Statue of Liberty costumes and carrying big signs? They look so weird.

This sounds like a great program.

  2. Any program that involves kids in a positive way has my support? Taxes? You could always get an extension!

    God bless you!

  4. A book is better than doing taxes, especially when one reaches the bottom line.

The scrooge character in this billboard looks somewhat like what a tax collector might look like.

I am very pleased not to be involved in the tax preparation process, other than to deliver and pick up the papers from the accountant, and to be a sympathetic ear to listen to Julie as she laments about the amount of time that it takes her to do the paperwork to keep track of everything.

  10. I would vote for the book, but those taxes are mandatory. Sad, but true.

  11. There is no better person to prepare your taxes than a Certified Public Accountant. Then you can read your book today.

  12. I did mine last week and I"m actually getting a tidy little sum back for the first time. Usually I get just enough to make up for what H & R Block was paid!

It's always good to read a book!

  13. It is always welcoming to find those souls interested in helping the community and that mural was fantastic.

Have fun with taxes, mine were completed back in Feb.

  14. The only problem is that good books are rare now...

  15. Oops. I woke up early, noticed a mistake on Julie's site, logged in as her a fixed it, and then left the above comment, without noticing that I was still logged in as her rather than me.

  16. I am so glad that we have those Non-Scrooge people to do these wonderful things for our communities! It is a fantastic mural! And, yes, I would prefer to read a book, too! Enjoy your day anyway, Jack!!

  18. Paying taxes is not an option. Well, at least for those like me who don't have any money at the Cayman Islands or any other offshore banking site... :-)

  21. I have been working on taxes for a week now but ours aren't due until April 30 so we have a bit more time here!
That was great to hear from the fellow about the mural post.

  22. Well, I guess not many people enjoy doing their taxes! It's easy to procrastinate.

  23. You'll enjoy the book more once the taxes are paid. Glad that our tax is taken automatically when we're paid.

  24. I agree - it is always so wonderful to hear from people who've seen a picture on the blog and have something to add to the story! One of my favorite parts of doing a daily photo blog is that I am constantly learning new things about my town.

    That mural is indeed spectacular.

  26. Death and taxes, Jack. At least the procrastinators get a couple extra days this year. Regarding your pic, reading a book truly can be like exploring a new world. I think J.K. Rowling did more for children and literacy than anyone will ever know.

  27. Nice that your blog gets a wide readership locally. I'd rather read a book than do my tax return anyday!
