A collection of Western art from 1830 to 1920 is currently being shown at the New Britain Museum of American Art. These two statues are Frederic Remington bronzes. The show has about 100 sculptures, paintings, prints, photographs and rare objects and artifacts. It is divided into four themes: Settlement, Landscape, Native Americans and Urbanization and Industrialization. The exhibition is sponsored by Bank of America and runs until early March.
Mr. Remington is one of my favorites! Wouldn't you love to have these pieces in your home? Non? Well, you would if you lived in the horse capital of the world! :-)
ReplyDeleteA collection of Western art in a New England Museum is likely a reflection of the wealth of the community in the late 1800's and the generosity of the community in giving to the museum.
ReplyDeleteI don't know the size of this museum, but Julie and I love the ambiance of some of the more intimate museums. I find it more relaxing to spend time at the Frick than the Met, or the Isabella Gardner rather than the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, or the Huntington Library & Gardens rather than the L.A. County of Art, or the Jacquemart-Andre rather than the Louvre.
the tower sits atop the hill across from the retreat. if you come to brattleboro sometime i'll take you up there if you're game for a moderate hike.

ReplyDeleteAh, Remington and western art! Thankfully our cities have generous benefactors that allow us to see these masterpieces. I once visited the cowboy museum in Oklahoma City and was mightily impressed. Museums are terrific!!
